In Gig Harbor, the story of Tides Tavern is a vivid example of how adaptability, investment in place, and family leadership can anchor a business through generations.

A Foundation Built on Community and Purpose

Erected in 1910 by Axel Uddenberg, the building that now hosts Tides Tavern originally served as the West Side Mercantile, a general store situated next to the town’s only public ferry landing, the “Peoples’ Dock.” Over time, as ownership changed hands, the space was repurposed—one pivotal shift came after Prohibition ended in the 1930s, with the addition of a tavern that transformed the building from a supply hub into a gathering place.

A Bold Revival by a Passionate Restaurateur

By the early 1970s, the building had fallen into disrepair—yet into that decline stepped Peter Stanley, who recognized its potential. In 1973, he purchased and meticulously renovated the structure before opening it as Tides Tavern on June 2. His decision not only revived a piece of local architecture but also brought a beloved communal space back to life.

Family Stewardship and Enduring Legacy

Nearly half a century later, the tavern remains family-owned—now under the stewardship of Dylan Stanley, Peter’s eldest son. For over 45 years, the Stanley family has upheld the tavern’s reputation as “the greatest house-made food and the finest beverages in the western hemisphere,” fostering a sense of place that resonates deeply with both locals and visitors.

Community Validation: Awards & Recognition

Tides Tavern’s enduring appeal is mirrored by accolades that reinforce its leadership in hospitality:

Peninsula Gateway’s “Best of Gig Harbor” includes honors such as Best Place to Get a Beer, Best Bar Food, and Best Restaurant with a View  .

• In 2012, readers selected Tides for First Place in Best Bar Food, Best Happy Hour, and Best Place to Get a Beer  .

• The tavern also received a Restaurant Neighbor Award in 2010, recognizing its philanthropic efforts in the community  .

These honors validate the business decisions underpinning the revival: investing in quality, creating an exceptional guest experience, and nurturing community ties.

Lessons in Business Resilience & Strategy

Identify latent value. The Stanley family saw opportunity in a neglected building and transformed it into a thriving enterprise.

Leverage heritage. The tavern’s historic roots and waterfront locale enhance its brand identity.

Foster community loyalty. Long-standing ownership and service attract repeat customers and positive word-of-mouth.

Deliver excellence. Consistent recognition for food, ambiance, and hospitality speaks to sustained operational quality.

Tides Tavern’s evolution—from general store to family-run institution—embodies how businesses rooted in place, purpose, and perseverance can become timeless.
