As we continue to celebrate Women's History Month, I had the profound honor of interviewing Holly Menino, the co-anchor of KOMO Morning News in Seattle. Holly's journey is a shining example of how curiosity, storytelling, and a commitment to service can shape a remarkable career. From her early days of engaging in community service projects in high school to becoming a trusted voice in broadcasting, Holly's path has been driven by a deep desire to inform and uplift her community.

During our conversation, Holly opened up about the pivotal moments that have defined her journey, including the transformative experience of motherhood, which reshaped her worldview and career aspirations. She also paid tribute to the incredible women who have mentored and supported her along the way, highlighting the importance of female solidarity and mentorship in her success.

Holly's leadership philosophy is rooted in love and kindness, and she has grown stronger and bolder in her approach over time. Her advice to women aspiring to leadership roles is both empowering and straightforward: seize the opportunity, lead with confidence, and make your presence felt at the table.

Join me as we delve into Holly Menino's inspiring story, celebrating her contributions to journalism and her reflections on the significance of International Women's Month. Her journey is a testament to the power of resilience, community, and the unwavering pursuit of one's passions.

SMB: What inspired you to pursue the career path you’re on today?

HM: Curiosity, storytelling, and service are the three main things that put me on my career path. I've always been naturally curious and have a big desire for information. I love listening to a good story and even more so, I love telling a good story. Serving others, especially our community, has always been a big part of who I am. I started doing service projects in high school and loved seeing the change it made in the lives of others. Keeping our neighbors informed as a broadcaster is another way of serving our community.

SMB: Were there any pivotal moments or people who played a significant role in shaping your journey?

HM: There are so many moments and so many people who have played a significant role in my journey. The most pivotal moment in my life was becoming a mother. After I had my son, I saw everything so differently. Motherhood changed me in the most incredible ways. My view of the world had changed, my career looked different, and my perspective was different. I've had some really incredible female managers who raised me up in ways I didn't know I needed until I reflect back. My first executive producer Amy Phillips and my first female news director Jen Dahl gave me some incredible opportunities. My dear friends Kim Stark and Tazya Williams, who I met in TV news, have always been in my corner. And of course, my current and first female co-anchor Kelly Koopmans, who I get the pleasure to sit beside every day on KOMO Morning News.

SMB: What does leadership mean to you, and how has your style evolved over time?

HM: To me, leadership is being an example to others and building others up. My style is simple: I lead with love and kindness. It's evolved in the sense that I've gotten stronger and more bold in how I lead others.

SMB: What advice would you give to women who aspire to take on leadership roles?

HM: First, do it! If not you, then who? Don't just take a seat at the table, but lead that table.

SMB: What does International Women’s Month mean to you personally?

HM: To me, International Women's Month is a time to honor the women who paved the way for us, celebrate the current women changemakers, and empower the next generation of female leaders.
